About Me

My Art Journey

Hi! I'm Sydnee. I'm a self-taught artist in my early 20's. I have to say, art was never in my life’s plans. My first love in the arts was ballet. From my first dance classes at 4 years old until the onset of my illness at 14, I never expected to quit dancing.

As they say, all good things must come to an end. At 14 years old I became disabled almost overnight with a severe case of Dysautonomia- a neurological condition for which there us no treatment. I could no longer go to school, play my flute, and I certainly couldn't dance anymore. Simply eating became a very big struggle. I underwent years of testing at many different hospitals, searching unsuccessfully for the underlying cause of my condition in the hopes to find a treatment. I had to find a way to homeschool myself as "distance learning" was not yet an option. Times were hard.

I had lost everything in a very short amount of time. My health, my hobbies, my friends, my school... it seemed as though nothing would get better. And then in a moment which my family refers to as my sudden “gift from God," I began drawing from my bed.

My first drawings featured dancers. I missed ballet more than anything, so drawing dancers seemed like the next best thing. This naturally grew into a love for drawing portraits. Soon after, I began drawing custom commissions for locals. With much encouragement from family, friends, and the art teachers at the local high school, I decided to stick with this new hobby.

My art has given me a passion and a purpose in life. I had no artistic talent prior to my illness, but I believe that God granted me this gift in order to bring joy and hope to myself and others.

I enjoy working with pencils and paints alike, but charcoal portraits are still my favorite to draw. I enjoy the challenge of capturing not just somebody's likeness, but their personality and spirit as well.

Thank you for your interest in my work! I hope that my art can bring you joy, healing, and inspiration, just like it has for me.
